Best place to buy coffee to take home in LP or Vientienne

I%26#39;d appreciate any recommendations of places to buy coffee beans to take home in either Luang Prabang or Vientiane

I buy my stuff at Talat Sao, the big market in Vientiane. Luang Prabang has a little stand set up at the night market selling Sinouk coffee, and you might be able to get some at the local market there as well...

Phonesavan mini maket - not the one opposite Kob Jai Der which is expensive, but the one in the same street as the Lao Plaza hotel, has a very good range of coffee and is not that expensive. Else Talat Sao as mentioned by Maneki.

Yeah, those little markets have a good selection of different varieties. (Mixay brand, ';organic'; coffee, etc) I think most of the stuff sold in those small packs is ground coffee, though, no?

I really like Lao Mountain Coffee the best - Sinouk is nice but I just prefer the lao. There are others of course.

I sometimes buy from the mini market next to Joma%26#39;s just off Namphu Circle. Last year Lao Mountain opened a new place out near That Luang. They were not really open then but the intention was to set up a small cafe and a coffee cupping session - so if you want to taste its worth checking if they are open yet. Prices are similar to the minimarkets but if you are buying a fair bit its cheaper. We came home with a suitcase full!

Definitely buy in Vientiane - much better than Luang Prabang for price.

Lao Mountain coffee%26#39;s email is info@loamountain.com - you can check with them to see if they are open. If you only want a kilo then its not worth the trip out - just buy at the minimarket.

Of course should you go down to Pakse you can get coffee directly from the Plateau but a lot of whats commonly on sale there is robusta beans and quality depends on the roasters. We got some delta (arabica) to try - okay but the others are much better.

Black Duck, that is the most expensive mini Mart in Vientiane.

Yes Rufuscat - I know its an expensive one BUT - Lao Mountain coffee is the same price there as anywhere else I%26#39;ve seen it including direct from Lao - except when we buy direct in big packs. They also have a lot of stuff the others don%26#39;t so sometimes its worth going there - my sister in law (who%26#39;s resident) goes for such things. I also stay up near Wat Inpeng and there are a couple of reasonable marts up there - just cant think what their names are.

The other reason for mentioning that particular one is that someone coming to Vientiane briefly will find it very easily so may find it convenient.

The price of the same packet of beans of Lao mountain, sinouk etc certainly varies between stores, and anywhere near nam phou is going to be more expensive, but its in the order of 3-6000 kip difference for 250g (about US$50c), whether you get it in an expensive expat shop like Phimphone, or a local store further out from the tourist/expat centre.
