Yes,Foreigners are allowed to rent motorbikes in Laos

Renting of motobikes

Thanks Laolady.

I have heard that the hiring of motorcycles has been banned in LP. I don%26#39;t know if this is accurate or not. Perhaps someone who has been there recently can confirm?

I %26#39;m not sure of the actual rules re. motorbikes but I can say that whilst I was there I did not see or hear of anyone renting scooters/motorbikes. If they are available for hire I certainly didn%26#39;t see any (bicycles yes....)

Hi - motorbike rentals in LP are discouraged by the tourism authority and provincial government there, so that visitors can%26#39;t bypass the many tour agents in town to visit the waterfalls etc. I heard this from a planner in the provincial government.

I generally rent motorbikes whenever I am having a break around Lao but have never managed to find one in LP so good luck!

Phonsavanh is another town where motorbike rentals are limited so as not to damage the local tourism income to the Jars, although there is one place near the market that still rents them.

I got a moto last time I was in LP.... it was about 4 years ago... and everybody else was dumfounded that someone had rented one to me!

I%26#39;m going back on Friday and the guesthouse we%26#39;re using says that you cant rent motos! I%26#39;m going to give it a go though!

So you are going to give it a go even though it is illegal? How would you feel about someone from os breaking the laws in Pommie land?

We were there last month and we were told tourists are definately not allowed to hire motorbikes now. There have been too many accidents apparently. You would be risking a fine if you did manage to hire or borrow one I should think.

I confirm, there is no bike rental in LPG. And therefore foreigner can%26#39;t rent motorbikes from LPG.

But driving a bike (as foreigner) in Luang Prabang is not forbidden. So, If you really need a motorbike either you know personally someone to whom you can borrow his motorbike, either you rent a motorbike from Vientiane and make your trip up north in Motorbike.

the only possibility to rent a bike in LP now... is to take one in Vientiane with Jules Classic Rental allowing you to drop it in LP. They have comprehensive insurance and the bikes are in very good condition.

But you won%26#39;t regret to do the trip from Vte to LPG: the road scenery is gorgeous and you can make a stop in Vang Vieng on your way.

More generally foreigners can ride a bike if they have an international driving license...but even your national one will be accepted.
