Hi everyone, we are travelling to laos in December for about a week. Does anyone know what would be the best way to go from Luang Prabang to Luang Nam Tha--I think there is an evening bus so you don%26#39;t ose a day travelling but would it be better to hire a car and driver? Also, does anyone know if it is easy to hire a car and driver in Luang Nam Tha to take us to Huay Xai--all the buses seem to be in the morning and we would like to go in the late afternoon. Thanks in advance.

it is easy to hire a minibus and driver in Luang Prabang to go virtually anywhere. However prices have sky-rocketed over the last year and you would probably be looking at a minimum of USD150 for the trip to Luang Namtha.

There are local buses to luang Namtha , it is a long day most people break their journey in oudomxay . Another suggestion for both trips is to look at the whiteboards outside agents premises . There are often minibuses looking for backloads , particularly in L N going back to huay xai. The local bus to Huay Xai, including pickup from your guest house cost 82,000 kip ($10 US), a minibus looking for passengers to go home should be about the same. Make sure that arent too many people .The road to Huay Xai is one of the newest and only takes 3 1/2 hr by minbus or 5 in a local bus.Be aware that it takes a long time to get anywhere by road , esp local buses.
There are local buses running evening and through the night from LP to Oudomxai - I was up there last week and some colleagues got one about 9pm. You can then get an early morning bus on to L Namtha.
The new road 13 has deteriorated quite badly last rainy season with lots of washouts and landslides so its not as fast as it was last year.
The new airport in L Namtha opened this year too, so thats another possible option for LP to Namtha
