The price of getting from Vientiane - Hanoi!!

Can anyone help me with an alternative to paying over £100pp for flying from Vientiane - Hanoi one way late January %26#39;09. That was the cheapest flight I could find, and was with Laos Airlines.

Im sure I looked a few months back and it was about £70 and I thought that was outrageous. Especially when you think that the average wage in laos is about £240 a year!

I appreciate that the current financial climate has changed but back in the UK I can get to Spain AND BACK for that amount.

Any help would be appreciated.

The price of getting from Vientiane - Hanoi!!

The airlines keep an international standard, regardless of the national average wage. You%26#39;re going to have to cough up the cash for international flights on Lao Airlines, or you have the much cheaper but time-consuming and sometimes nerve-wracking option of going overland.

I live in Japan and I have to pay, on average, 30% or even %40 more than peopel flying similar or even longer distances to the same destinations I fly. This is due to demand and/or various monopolies companies have in the market. I%26#39;d still opt to fly...

Can anyone suggest best way and aprox. time it would take to travel overland from Vientaine to Siem Reap? Go via Pakse and into Cambodia or through Thailand/ Woul dit be better to fly and what airline is best? Thanks

Easy flight with Laos Airlines. Much more comfortable than by road.

Has anyone done the luxury boat trip which is about $us400 at this time of year ? Is it worth the money ? What about the other boats (NOT speeD boats). Also has anyone recently been to the Gibbon Experience , they seem difficult to contact . What is the best way to get to Luang Nam Tha from Huay Xai ? I hear the bus is a bit of a shocker ?

Laung Prabang - best time to visit

    Hi All

What would be the preferable time to visit Luang Prabang June or Late Sept/october.

    cheers

Laung Prabang - best time to visit

September is pretty low season, I%26#39;d go then. I was down south on the islands this September and the place was totally devoid of tourists. Quite a change from when I was there in February!

Laung Prabang - best time to visit

I would hold off until mid/end of October if I were you. The rainy season is May-start of October - so if you go in June or September you are likely to get caught in the bad weather.

I was in Laos mid to late October and the rain had pretty much finished, (the odd shower!) Luang Prabang/Vang Vieng etc had some tourists but was far from crowded, so I would recommend a similar time for you.

It hardly rained at all when I was there in September, and I spent 2 days with really excruciatingly hot and sunny weather in a teeny village 4 hours from Luang Prabang. Gosh, rain would%26#39;ve been nice! The only downside of traveling during rainy season is that there are huge puddles of mud in the villages,

and some overland travel may be suspended. This year there was massive flooding which put a halt to some of the long-distance bus routes.

I have been in LP in september, I%26#39;d go then, seems the airline companys like to boost thier prices in June and reduce them again after the first week of september so you%26#39;ll save money there, it is rainy season but when I was there only had a couple wild thunderstorms that knocked out the power to everything but was pretty cool to watch, if you went this year you would have had some flooding in LP, but the airs clean (no burning going on) the mekong is up, weather is pretty good, theres a boatracing festival in september also, and its considered low season, Callao

as far as the weather goes, I%26#39;d say you can%26#39;t really predict the weather very well at any time of the year as this year was very wet but if you went this week you%26#39;d hit alot of rain (not normal) and in march of last year i was VTE and hit alot of rainy weather (not normal), but in september it was nice with little rain so you can only hope you hit it right, I%26#39;m going next week and hope the weather is good myself, callao

Hi - yes september would get my vote too - the rainy season should have ended (although not this year....) and you are still before the busiest tourist season of Dec-March. I go to LP every month and prefer Sept-Nov for climate and more space on the footpaths.

transportation: Siem Reap - Vientiane - LuangPrabang -Hanoi

    Help please!

What is the most interesting way to travel from Siem Reap to Vientiane? then from Vientiane to Luang Prabang? Then from Luang Prabang to Hanoi? Any ideas?

    Thanks!

transportation: Siem Reap - Vientiane - LuangPrabang -Hanoi

There are only a few options: 1) Hire own fast-speed boat on the Mekong and other rivers. Very expensive (about $1000) and very dangerous, or low-speed (several days) for slightly less, maybe around $600. If you like to wager your life you can always take a bus! Cheap, maybe $50 -100 for your itinirerary. 2) Hire cars and drive yourself = you will be lucky to survive! 3) Hire car and driver -- same risk as previous option but very expensive. Bottom line: FLY! Risks with Indochina airlines are considerable but safer than road/river transport. Good luck, you will need it. I have 20 years experience traveling in Indochina.

transportation: Siem Reap - Vientiane - LuangPrabang -Hanoi

Ha Ha! The above oomment makes me smile! I have a feeling your 20 years travelling around Indo-China took place some while ago. I live in Laos and travel these routes regularly.

The information regarding boats is 100% wrong. The Mekong, along all of these routes, is unnavagable. (waterfalls, for a start, pose a large problem to boats!) There are some shorter trips you can that can be travelled and they are nowhere close to the costs mentioned.

Renting a car - ridiculous f for so many reasons (costs, need to return it from the city you got it from, cannot cross borders without correct permits)

Flights are possible on all of these routes. Costs, environmental impact and missing the sights are reasons I would avaoid flying if i could.

Siem Reap - Vientiane. Its a long journey however you travel. There is an overnight VIP coach offered from offices in the centre of Siam reap. It%26#39;s safe, though long and not so exciting. Alternatively, you can travel to Champasak in Laos, then cross to Pakse, then upto Vientiane. Its a nice route. More common perhaps though is crossing back to Thailand and travelling either a) through the Isan or b) into Bangkok and taking the sleeper train to Nong Khai (Border town with Vietiane.

Vientiane - Luang Prabang. Can be a a little more scary, but is one of the most beautiful bus rides you%26#39;ll ever take. More common is first Vientiane to Vang Vieng. Take a break then continue to LP. VIP and local buses cover this route with lots of buses. If you fly this you are missing out!

LP to Hanoi - over land is spectacular but a monster journey. Possibly the most interesting journey Ive taken in South East Asia taking in some incredible places (Vieng Xai inparticular). Its a mission, but if you time well worth it. Otherwise you fly this one. You can also go up into China and take a train around. time consuming, but very interesting (and not very well travelled)

';Risks with Indochina airlines are considerable.'; they haven%26#39;t been in years! Where are you getting this outdated information from?

I would certainly fly from Siem Reap to Vientiane and definitely from Vientiane to Luang prabang. The bus trip is not pleasant as the road is very windy. The plane does not fly that high, so you can see a lot of the landscape anyway. If you enjoy 10 hours on a bus, I certainly don%26#39;t.

I did all these routes almost year ago, but not in the order you wish to travel. I flew each time. Time constraints mostly being the reason. SR to V, probably only flying makes sense. Also, LP to H. But, if you have the time, the bus from V to LP - with stops along the way, especially to Viang Veng - will get you a fabulous insight into the rural beauty of the country and how the Lao people really live. Regarding the airlines. All the guidebooks and other information I had told me, don%26#39;t use Lao Air, and if you do, only fly routes where they use French built ATR 7 aircraft - the newest in their fleet. We still used them, had no other choice - and they switched plane on us to old Chinese ones which rattled and shook, but just cleared the treetops and mountains. That would probably certainly qualify for your %26#39;interesting%26#39; way to travel. I%26#39;m still here to tell the tale, however! (Actually, we found airlines in SE Asia to be way better than the local ones that we encountered in Latin American, surprisingly.) Better airlines in these parts include Vietnam Air, Siem Reap Airways and Bangkok Airways, all of whom cover all or most of these routes. Thai is the best, but also the most expensive. Can%26#39;t help with prices as aviation fuel costs will affect prices today. We never used a %26#39;fast%26#39; boat, but did use a few slow boats for short side trips. Slow is the word, so unless you really have a long time, and travel downstream always, this would be very tedious for these long journeys. The fast boats certainly zip along, but I never met a local who would use one if they could afford one! The roads are a serious challenge, especially across borders - for any number of reasons, including: They get washed away each rainy season, and most are dirt track for much of their route. Accurate road maps don%26#39;t exist.

Good luck with the travels - a fascinating part of the world to visit.

Another company that does tours of Laos is Explore, they have a variety of tours either originating in the UK or Bangkok.

Thanx for your very prompt answers ! Any advise on 2 week itinerary - best time of year gratefully accepted . We would love to see as much as poss without going to crazy . Do you think we could see Laos for £2000 per person inc flights from the uk or are we just dreaming . We are getting really excited just reading the forum !!!!

    Again many thanks

    akmlg

December through March are the dry months, but they start to slash and burn trees at the end of February so there%26#39;s a bit of smoke. It tends to get bad with the smoke in March. Dry season also means a LOT of tourists, so if you pick a month like September, towards the end of rainy season, it will not be so crowded (and it doesn%26#39;t rain every day!).

You should be able to have a holiday for well under £2000 each.

You might want to check out Responsible Travel who are agents for a few different companies providing holidays to various far eastern countries including Laos.

    Where to visit?

Im visiting Laos for two weeks in mid January and was just lookng for advice on a rough itinerary from someone who has done the trip in a similar timeframe. I%26#39;m entering overland either through cambodia or vietnam. I realise this is a very broad question so all suggestions are very welcome.

    Thank you,

    Dave.

    Where to visit?

I suggest you first choose a guidebook, and have a look. (I have the past 2 editions of Lonley Planet, which are pretty good and have decent maps)

There is really a lot to do in Laos if you have 2 weeks, and a guide can help you plan your route, and you can go at your own pace and select activities that appeal to you. There%26#39;s caving, innertubing, visiting temples, cooking classes, watching gibbons, seeing waterfalls, spending days sleeping in hammocks, trekking- what interests you? Additionally, what is your budget? That will have a big bearing on how you plan/spend your trip.

    Where to visit?

    Dave,

I agree with maneki. It depends on what you are interested in. Nth, Sth, Luang Prabang. etc etc

Dec last year I was walking around wearing a jumper, (sorry US friends, I mean a sweater :-) ). It was pretty damn cool, but I guess I am acclimatised now.

The 3 times I%26#39;ve been to Vientiane(%26amp; once in LP) in December it has been pretty cool at night, definitely warranting a sweater, jumper, fleece thingee, whatever. Now up in Phonsavan, that%26#39;s another story. Bloody freezing up there! Be prepared!

    Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me out or direct me to the right place.

I recently booked flights with Lao Airlines off their website. My credit card was billed but I have not recieved my tickets yet (it has been over 1 week now). I have tried contacting Laos Airlines through email but have not yet recieved a response. I will attempt to call them but can anyone recommend who I should contact or if they have experienced this themselves?

Any advice or direction you could give us would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a hiccup somewhere-normally you get e tickets by return email.

I had 4 tickets that way, and very efficient it was too.

Has the debit gone through your card account? If it has and you are not getting a reply on email then a phone call is the only answer.

you should have got an email reciept and e ticket number at the time of the booking, if you don%26#39;t you will need to call them and remember its plus 15 hours from pacific standard time, 12 hours EST call during thier business hours and hope you have a transaction number or something, there are english speaking people in the Vientiane office, callao

price of buses between Luang Prabang, Vang Vien

We are travelling to Laos in February 09 and would like to go overland to Vientiane, stopping on the way at Vang Vien.

I am trying to work out our budget and would be grateful for some pointers. Is there a decent bus ?, do we hire a car ?....and how much ?

We are retired folk and have done our share of travelling rough but not now so if anyone has a view re what the road and bus conditions are like we%26#39;d be grateful.

    Cheers

price of buses between Luang Prabang, Vang Vien

Bus service in Laos is efficient and cheap (when the roads aren%26#39;t washed out during rainy season!). From Vang Vieng it%26#39;s 25,000 kip one way per person to Vientiane. (That%26#39;s about $2.50). Road conditions are usually fine after October, save for the occasional pothole, which drivers know how to avoid. December-March are the driest seasons. Hiring a car can be pricey. The bus is a great and inexpensive way to travel!

price of buses between Luang Prabang, Vang Vien

if you fancy something with a bit more comfort regular minibuses depart several times a day costing around USD6 for the Vientiane to Vang Vieng trip and USD10 for Vang vieng to Luang Prabang.

Car hire (with or without driver) is more expensive and you would be looking at around USD70-100 per day for this.

    Good luck,

    Lee

Thanks everyone for your information-very useful.

The mini-buses I%26#39;ve seen here look jam packed. We just booked the VIP Bus (big bus with on board toilet) for KIP 145,000 per person to Vang Vieng from Luang Prabang - it takes 5 hours and stops twice for 5 mins each time on the way.

1 extra day in Chiang Mai or Luang Prabang?

I will be traveling to Southeast Asia in January 2009 and would greatly appreciate advice from travellers who have been to these two cities. I am trying to decide in which city to spend one extra day, Chiang Mai or Luang Prabang. Our current itinerary has us staying in CM for 4 1/2 days, and LP for 3 1/2 days but we have an extra day we can tack on somewhere. We are hoping to do the following activities:

    1) Cooking class (Chiang Mai)

    2) Gibbon Adventure/ zip-lining (Chiang Mai)

    3) Elephants (and bamboo rafting if possible)

    4) Trekking and hill tribes

Has anyone done the elephant farms or hill tribe treks in Laos? I am wondering if these activities might be better in Laos or Chiang Mai. Weather is a consideration (January 9-13).

    Thanks for any advice!

    K.

1 extra day in Chiang Mai or Luang Prabang?

I will spend one extra day in LP without second thought. I have done all of your list except number 2. I did cooking class in CM and LP. I don%26#39;t think you need to do it both place. I liked the cooking class in CM with A Lot of Thai. Trekking in Laos was highlight of our trip to Laos. It is very beautiful.

1 extra day in Chiang Mai or Luang Prabang?

Yes an extra day in LP - Chiang Mai is nice but definitely past its peak. The combined elephant ride/village walk/kayaking day in LP is about $70 and longer 3 day mahout courses are available. The farm is about 10km from LP town.

Trekking in Laos is more original and unchanged than around the Chiang Mai area - the treks through villages I did there a few years ago (2002) were quite Disneyfied (although its the popularity of trekking that eventually makes them this way of course). There are good treks starting from Luang Namtha, Muang Ngoi, or Oudomxai, all a few hours(3-6)bus north of LP.

And your last query - the weather is great in January - dry, and cool at night

My vote also goes for Luang Prabang - one needs as long as possible here to absorb the restful atmosphere which gets slower the longer you stay. Its a very special sort of place.

Thanks for everyone%26#39;s advice and suggestions! Based on your recommendations I%26#39;ve decided to add the day to Luang Prabang and take a day excursion to trek in the countryside surrounding LP rather than Chiang Mai. I am considering doing treks with either Tiger Trails or Green Discovery...any thoughts? I%26#39;ve read generally very good reviews of both companies with the odd negative comment.

    Thanks again!

    K.

Good choice - I am in LP and love it so much I keep extending my stay. I have scrapped visiting Thailand on this trip because Laos is so cool.

What are you hoping to inspect? I suggest flying into Vientiane, spending a day there, then flying up to Luang Prabang. You will not have the time to go overland, and by flying you will be able to see those two cities. From Vientiane there are daily flights (10:00am I think) to Phnom Penh...

Availability in Luang Prabang Nov 5-10 - everything booked?

You could try contacting a hotel directly and asking if they are booked do they know of any that aren%26#39;t. I had the same problem a couple of years ago - think it was sala luang prabang i contacted and they said they were booked up but told me that satri house was available.

For anyone stressing about this I am here right now and there are plenty of places with rooms available. I think the ones in the guide books are quite booked up but there are heaps of places that are unlisted, good and available.

Hi - even if the hotels and guest houses near the 2 rivers (main tourist area) are booked up, there are dozens of nice hotels just 5-10 minutes stroll further away from the river - the road up to and beyond Dala market and those off from this road in particular. You will see Dala market on any LP map. I usually stay about 1km from the river as you get much more value for money here too.

Places where there is no continuous electricty

Is there normally no problem in charging batteries (cameras/ipods/PMPs etc) in those places where there are only generators for part of the day. I%26#39;m not even sure if the guest houses in these places would have power outlets. I%26#39;m talking about places like Pak Beng, Don Khon etc.

Places where there is no continuous electricty

Yep, the electricity on Don Kone, Don Det and the other smaller islands goes off between 9:00 and 10:00pm. There will be no outlets in the bamboo bungalows, but if you are staying at places like Sala Don Khone or Souksan Hotel, they will have outlets. A lot of those bungalows are attached to restaurants and they might let you use their outlets. (Make sure you are there when regcharging your valuable electronic items, though!)

Places where there is no continuous electricty

Thanks. I was just wondering how other people got on with this. I don%26#39;t really care about ipods and the like (although my kids can%26#39;t do without them), but I%26#39;m a serious amateur photographer so keeping cameras and backup devices charged is pretty important to me.

I%26#39;m guessing some of the generators used in these places are not really the latest and greatest either; like with no voltage regulator, and without that electonic gear can be esily damaged. Something to be aware of anyway.

You%26#39;re right with regards to power regulators. It%26#39;s best to charge up your batteries/electronics before going to out of the way places or else you%26#39;re taking a risk with your %26#39;toys%26#39;. Fortunately, most digital cameras these days have AC chargers that have built in regulators with a voltage range of between 100-240Vs, allowing for charging in most circumstances BUT it%26#39;s best if you get a compact power surge protector.

PS--Luang Prabang did experience a power outage this morning, Wednesday, Nov 12th, for about one hour from 7-8AM. Power outages tend to occur in LP on weekends, during the day and sometimes for 2-4 hours at a time. But by evening, the power is almost always reset.

  • Bicyling in Laos

Can anyone recommend an outfitter for a bike trip in Laos?

We are 2 over 40, well traveled individuals...can you recommend a good path in terms of riding. To start in Luang Prabrang and then ride for a few days and go to??? I%26#39;ve read here that Vang Vien is not so interesting. All comments welcome.

    Bicyling in Laos

Vang Vieng is amazing, especially the karst mountain scenery (and countless caves to explore!). You will need mountain bikes for that terrain. People with negative reviews of VV have spent their time in the center of town talking with other backpackers and watching TV. Waste of time,if you ask me...

I have heard they are no longer renting out bikes in Luang Prabang, for what reason no one seems to be able to explain. Arrange a cycling tour when you get there. Inquire at one of the many agencies in town. Guesthouses may also be able to arrange this.

    Bicyling in Laos

Girltraveler85, I think the ride from LP to VV is fantastic (I did this route last year - I have some small number of photos at noexpectations.com.au/galleries/laos-decembe… ). You can see the route in Google Maps at maps.google.com/… (it%26#39;s missing the first bit from LP but you%26#39;ll get the idea).

It%26#39;s about a 3 day ride, the first two days are quite tough in the mountains but really spectacular views and scenery. I remember very clearly the 22km ride up the last hill of the day (I am also over 40). On the other hand, I also remember some fantastic downhills as well :-)

VV is a good place to rest for a bit, and the road from their to Vientiane isn%26#39;t as interesting. I took my own bike which worked out well.

PM me if you have any questions,

    --Kip

    Hi - re. Outfitters:

there is only one shop in Laos that sells the type of bike you could go touring on, on Dongpalane close to the well known morning market. This is the only place you could get a decent bike but I don%26#39;t think he has panniers and racks. All the other bikes for sale in Laos are cheap chinese ones and wouldn%26#39;t get you far! There are also some Thai mountain bikes around but again not touring machines.

You would be much better off bringing your own bike which is what most cycle tourists do here.

Given that April is the dry season, is river travel from downstream to Luang Pranbang still viable?

    Hello

I will leave in 2 days for Laos..but have still small questions.

-Do you need a visa card to take off money, or is a bancontact/maestro card only also ok?

-Can you take medicines with you in airport/hand luggage (eg malaria medicines,..).

    Thanks a lot!

Both credit cards and ATM cards work.

Customs doesn%26#39;t usually care about medicines, in reasonable quantities. You don%26#39;t need malaria medication for Laos, but mosquito repellent is a very good idea.

Do you realize that by adding in your travel time you will only be allowing yourself a day or so in each place??? I suggest omitting one country altogether, otherwise it will end up costing you a great deal of money and you will be so busy schlepping around that you won%26#39;t have time to really see anything.

Cambodia, Laos %26amp; Vietnam 13 days tour

I agree. You will see more of bus stations or railway stations or airports than the countries you are visiting. Having visited 2 out of the 3 countries and just about to set off to Laos do yourself a favour and take a bit more time to look around . You can always visit the other country a later date.

Have only visited Hanoi so far from those on your list ( visiting Cambodia and Laos shortly

But must agree that your timeframe seems far too short.

I had an absoluteley magical time on Ha Long bay sleeping overnight on the boat and watching sunrise over the the bay... one of the most magical of experiences and to be recommended.

    Reuben

I have been to all of those countries, (Cambodia and Laos several times over) and spent at least 2 weeks in each country. As an American citizen, it is quite costy to get visas for those places (Vietnam around $80, Laos $35, Cambo. $20), plus the Angkor Wat entance fee (I opt for the $40, 3-day pass) and the swell $25 departure fee you pay at the airport when flying out of Cambodia. Personally, I would feel I hadn%26#39;t gotten my moneysworth by just spending a few days in each place! :-)

I have to ditto the others. I spent 3 days in Phnom Penh and four in Siem Reap and STILL felt rushed. I think you will have a better experience if you spend more time in fewer locations.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I will arrange to spend more time in each country.

    Recommend restaurants and massage

We will be in LP for 4 days next month. Could you recommend a place for massages and also a couple of restaurants for dinner.

The best restaurant by far is th Three Nagas. Le Elephant is not too bad either.

I don’t think you have any trouble finding somewhere nice for dinner.. cafés , restaurants everywhere. Nice to have meals at one of the cafes along the river.

I never went to a spa, though noticed the Khmu Spa in the main street.

We went to the smaller massage shops. There is a good one next door to the Café in main street. The café is painted blue with banana trees in pots out front can not miss it. The the red cross is worth supporting ( a little bit of a walk from main tourist centre)

    Bus to Vang Vieng

    Hi there,

I%26#39;m spending part of my honeymoon in Laos and as part of the trip we%26#39;ll be travelling from Vientiane to Vang Vieng.

Does anyone know how frequently the VIP buses leave Vientiane?

    Bus to Vang Vieng

    Hello,

There are daily VIP buses leave Vientiane for Vangvieng, first one is in the morning and other is in afternoon.

    Bus to Vang Vieng

There are also minibuses which depart a couple of times a day as well. Tickets for this can be bought at the Green Discovery office next to Khop Chai Deu restaurant in Vientiane city centre,

    Cheers

    Lee

    www.vientiane-hotel-link.com

how long does the trip take?

3 1/2 hours. Take the regular bus from Talat Sao Market. 7:00am is the first bus, and you arrive in the morning and will have all day to spend in VV!

Thanks everyone for your advice. Would I be right to assume that the buses from Vang Vieng back to Vientiane are just as regular?

Yup, they leave in the morning at the little bus station in Van Vieng. You pay the fare on the bus...

Coming back from VV the last regular bus to Vientiane is about 4pm. The last aircon is 1pm.

If you want to get the most out of your day, the communal pickups (songthaew) run about every 20 mins up till about 9pm.

They leave from the VV bus station, cost 25000kip ($3)and are usually faster than the bus at about 2.5 hrs. If you get in first you get the indoor seat next to the driver (with the seatbelt!)

Does anyone know what time the first VIP bus leaves VV in the morning?

Vientiane To LP Direct or ?

Very sorry - I posted this on the wrong thread!

Dave442, probably the most popular place to stop on the way to LP from VTE is VV (Vang Vieng). Vang Vieng is one of those curious places that seems to polarise.

For some - me included - its a great place to chill out, do some tubing or kayaking; sit in a daybed all day and drink $1 beer Lao if you want. Or hire a motorbike and visit some small villages and enjoy some spectacular karst scenery.

For others its a seething hub of hash-pizza joints with Friends and the Simpsons on a repeating loop.

It%26#39;s quite possible both views are correct. The good news is you can chose to participate in either or both scenarios. It%26#39;s up to you. It%26#39;s only a small town but the ';town'; centre is separate from the ';river life'; by enough of a gap to give the choice.

But I think it%26#39;s worth at least an overnight stop on the way up to LP.

I have a few photos of VV (and the route between VTE and LP) at noexpectations.com.au/galleries/laos-decembe…

    Cheers, --Kip

Vang Vieng is the logically place to break up the journey. Over the last couple of years Vang Vieng has got some bad press for its town cente, which to be honest is completely justified. However what most people miss out on is that if you make a slight effort to get off the beaten track, you can have some fanctastic experiences. The scenery is fantastic, the people are great and there is so much to explore.

Just stay away from watching friends and the simpsons and its a great place to visit.

Hello, I am trying to book a hotel room in LP but everything appears to be fully booked. Is that possible given the worldwide economic slowdown? I just need a double room for Tuesday (nov. 18) night. Any ideas?

    Hotel rooms busy?

During high season (Nov-April) booking mid range or top end accommodation in Laos can be tricky and I would highly recommend booking in advance,

You will always be able to find budget guesthouses when you are there though.

Laos is reporting about a 15% decline in tourism numbers due to the combination of economic slowdown and the problems in Thailand over recent months, but I have not actually seen much evidence of this, and Laos seems as busy as ever.

    Thailand to Laos to Hanoi

    Dear lovely trippers!

I%26#39;m considering re-arranging my trip to start in Bangkok then travel up to Chiang Mai, into Laos and then to Hanoi! Any advise on how long this would take and the best ways to do it?

    Thailand to Laos to Hanoi

What do you plan on doing there? I%26#39;d give Bangkok and Chiang Mai a few days each, at least a week if you%26#39;re going to see a couple cities in Laos, and at least 5 days for Hanoi. If you%26#39;re flying it would be ideal. If not, eliminate one country or lengthen your trip. If you%26#39;re an American citizen , you%26#39;re going to be shelling out a lot of money for visas (not necessary for Thailand, however)...

    Thailand to Laos to Hanoi

I did this exact route and we did it thus:

    Three nights in Bangkok.

Bus from Bangkok to Sukothai. One night in Sukothai.

Bus from Sukothai to Chiang Mai. Three nights in Chiang Mai.

Bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. One night in Chiang Rai.

Slow boat from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang. This takes two days with a stop in Pakbeng overnight.

    Three nights in Luang Prabang.

Bus from LP to Vang Vieng. Three nights in Vang Vieng.

Bus from VV to Vientiane. Flight from Vientiane to Hanoi. We spent 6 days in and around the Hanoi area (including Sapa and Halong Bay).

We also flew back to Bangkok after this and down to the Thai islands but I%26#39;m guessing your itinerary won%26#39;t allow for this.

Thanks homesick! We will actually be getting to enjoy the Thai Islands! Yay!

    Malaria

I don%26#39;t think there is any need for anti malaria medication for the areas we will be visiting in Thailand. However, we are going to visit Luang Prabang for about 8 days. Looking at the CDC map it recommends meds. Any suggestions.

    Malaria

There are a million posts asking this question. The following is simply my opinion(and has been while traveling throughout Asia for more than 20 years)-

If you want to ply your body with unneccessary medications, go ahead. Long sleeved shirts and pants and a good supply of bugspray will suffice, though. If you are even more concerned, bring mosquito coils and a bednet. Dengue fever is even more of a problem these days and meds ain%26#39;t gonna help prevent that!

Better advice would be to get your hep A %26amp; B shots and a tetanus booster. Cheers!

    Malaria

I endorse above advice. It is a personal decision but I have always found these precautions suffice. Abugspray of bare parts before venturing out of an evening is the most important act.

I have never found bug spray a 100% solution against getting bitten-I just seem to be prone to bites .I take malarone as a precaution -but as other posters say it is a personal decision

Clothing works wonders to prevent against mozzie bites. Most falang insist on revealing so much of their bods that it is a feeding frenzy for hungry mosquitoes...

As we went to Laos with a large family we were concerned about Malaria but followed Maneki-neko and others advice by covering up in a major way. We also used repellent and took a homeopathic against Malaria each day.

Yes, we were all hotter from the long sleeves but our health was excellent and we didn%26#39;t have the stress of worry.

There is no way I was going to have our family taking medication while we were away so the natural commonsense way was the only path to take.

Enjoy Laos...it is so so beautiful!!

Use Ultrathon by 3M...you can purchase it on the Internet at travel stores...it%26#39;s the best protection you%26#39;ll find for mosquitoes. It%26#39;s been used and tested by the US military in the deep jungles of South America and proven effective. Safe and happy travels.

Just something to think about for those who dont believe in malaria prophylaxis.A malaria cluster was investigated by the NSW Dept of Heath and it was discovered they were all from the same group that trekked the Kokoda track in august 2006.38 in the group and they were all found.results-12 took malaria prophylaxis as reccomended-none got malaria.

24 took prophylaxis but missed doses-2 got malaria.

4 did not take any prophylaxis-4 got malaria.

    19 used DEET-3 got malaria.

19 did not use DEET-3 got malaria.

30 of the 38 could not remember seeing mosquitoes. So prophylaxis worked,Deet did not.

Simply using DEET and using Ultrathon is not the same thing. DEET comes in many forms and not all are created equal.

I wonder how many sufered side effects evident either now or later. Also did they test for Dengue fever which is far more serious? What prophylactic protected against that, eh?

    ';I wonder how many sufered side effects evident either now or later. Also did they test for Dengue fever which is far more serious? What prophylactic protected against that, eh?';

Are you talking about the side effects of DEET or antimalarials?

Read the EPA report on National Parks workers in the Everglades Florida. Those that used DEET regularly suffered from insomnia, agitation and scored worse on tests of memory and comprehension than those who did not use DEET regularly.

If taking precautions did not stop malaria then it would not stop dengue either would it?

And the person who did not take antimalarials but used DEET,wore only long sleeved shirts and long trousers and took a bed net got malaria.Sure you can reduce your chances but you cant guarantee efficacy.

And I repeat-those that took antimalarials as advised did not get malaria.

    You didn%26#39;t look too hard.

I%26#39;m staying at Lotus Villa at the moment and have been here for nearly a week. All the rooms are a decent size, and some are large. Why would you need a tv when there are so many restaurants to eat at that you could try a different one every night for weeks? You will be so busy during the day exploring the town and area that I doubt you could even stay awake long enough to watch tv in the evening! If you miss the news you can read it on the abc website via the free internet in the lobby.

Oh, and if you have not booked a room yet, then do so fast as they are heavily booked for the next few months. I%26#39;ve had a wonderful stay at Lotus Villa and have heard no complaints from fellow travellers.

Note that many roads in Laos aren%26#39;t always paved, but still passable although some more caution is required in the rainy months.

Make sure you plan a border crossing that is open and that you have your Vietnam visa in advance (I think it would be tricky without that).

Sounds a really good ride, hope it works out and you let us know how it went.

    Bicycling from LP to Hanoi?

Hi - it was in the paper last week that you can now get visas issued at NaMeo, the border crossing in Houaphan, the closest crossing to Hanoi. I used to be a mad keen cycle tourist but have only done this route by truck, a few times - Luang Prabang - Phonsavanh - Sam Neua - Vietnam border.

The road is a widing narrow mountain road from about 40km out of Phonsavanh all the way to the border. The surface is tarsealed but has holes %26amp; landslide damage etc - but OK for a bike.

The distances are about 200km LP to Phonsavanh, 240km Phonsavanh to Sam Neua, and then about 100km to the border.

It would be a great route if you are fit, and passes the ViengXai caves and the standing stones.

Thanks for great info! Sadly I got sick and ended up taking the plain to Hanoi (wich was nice by the way). Maybe some other time..

Yes Philip, this is a bogus site. It is run by a French agent and there have been some problems with him.

laos-airlines - Best Luang Prabang Travel deals

My issue is that it appears here, at the top of the page on this TA forum, under %26#39;Best Deals for Luang Prabang%26#39;. Presumably these companies can have TA promote them as %26#39;Recommended%26#39; or %26#39;Best%26#39; just by paying for the link listing. Seems like just paying should not be the criteria for being %26#39;Recommended%26#39; or %26#39;Best%26#39;, especially, if the company is not the one (the real Lao Airlines) which people expect to contact when they click on the link. Also, note that the booking agencies listed under %26#39;Best%26#39; and %26#39;Recommended%26#39; are only agencies which only represent the big, high-end and expensive Lao hotels

I totally agree with your post above. It shows that posters should be very careful when taking advice from the internet. There have also been cases on this site where unfavourable reviews have been deleted.

How to get to laos from Cambodia

You can fly from PP to VTE. Or you could opt to take buses.

  • laos airlines - baggage maximum?

    Hi All,

I apologize if this has been asked before - I did a brief search and I did not find anything.

We are flying Laos Airlines from BKK to LPQ. We were wondering if there is a more stringent baggage allowance? Or is it like a normal flight where you can check in one bag and have one carry-on bag as well?

    Thanks in advance

    Best,

    Halankar

    laos airlines - baggage maximum?

If you pass thru all other airline without any problem with your bags or carry-on, than you should be fine with Laos Airline. Last year, on Korean airline leaving Dallas to Laos, I was able to carry a luggage with me from Dallas, but when I get to Korea for my second flight to Bangkok, they will not allow me to take the same luggage on the flight to BKK. I end up check the bag to BKK. This is a same Airline operated in different country, that mean different rule applied. Good Luck

    laos airlines - baggage maximum?

    Hi,

20 kg, says so in the ticket.

We had flown in from LHR via BKK with 25-27k each and had no problem on our two internal LaosAir flights or our Bangkok Air out from LP.

    Lao Consulate NYC

    Hi all,

Is it possible to get a Lao visa in advance at the Lao consulate in New York City? I would like to try to save some time when we arrive in LP. I tried looking online for the website, but for some reason it is not loading on my computer and directs me to a link for the Laos embassy website in Thailand.

    Thanks!

    Lao Consulate NYC

A few weeks ago I would have said this would be a good thing to do. Be aware however, that Laos has recently greatly simplified the methods of obtaining visas, and you now get a visa when your passport is stamped on entry. The time to get the visa has been greatly shortened. You will not save any time by getting it beforehand.

    Lao Consulate NYC

Okay, great, thanks! I was a little worried when I read that immigration lines could be really long. We only have 3 days in LP, and I would like to maximize that as much as possible by being efficent beforehand!!

There are only one Laos consulate in the USA. It is located in Washington D. C. If you get your visa ahead of time you do not have to stand in short or long line. Anyway a line is a line, no line is even better. good luck with your trip

Puttzy it appears you don%26#39;t, (can%26#39;t), read posts. You will wait exactly the same length of time now with or without a visa.

Hope this copy of an earlier posting of mine helps:-

';Just arrived back from Laos so this is as up to date as it gets.

When flying into Vientiane on an International flight the FA%26#39;s will give you two forms - Visa Application and Customs Declaration. To save time complete these before you land.

In the arrival hall you will see the Visa desk to your right, just beyond the large table on which those who didn%26#39;t fill in the forms on the aircraft are scribbling like mad so not to be at the back of the queue.

Join the first queue and present your application form, passport and photos. [Note - the form says 3 photos, we took 2 and were given 1 back ! Also if you have forgot to bring any they will snap you there for a $]

The first thing that you will notice is that you are greeted with a smile - this is Laos!

You are then directed to the second queue where you wait whilst your Visa is processed and are called forward to pay your fee (varies from country to country and is currently $35 for the UK)and collect your passport.

You then go through passport control (another smile)collect your luggage and pass through Customs ,handing in your Declaration Form. More smiles.

    Enjoy Laos before it changes - it is like no where else in SE Asia.';

Pakse - getting a Vietnam visa

    Hi there,

Anyone got any idea if you can get a Vietnam visa sorted in Pakse, and if so how long it takes?

Pakse - getting a Vietnam visa

Tour companies in Pakse should be able to help you get a Vietnam visa - there is also a vietnamese consulate but not sure if they can help with visas or not. Would allow a minimum of 3 working days for the visa.

If you don%26#39;t find a travel buddy, do know that you could do that on your own, all inclusive, for about $500.

    3 days, what to do....

If you had 3 full day%26#39;s in Luang Prabang in January 09, where would you stay (how about a botique hotel, mid range, and what would your game plan be? What is absolutely not to be missed? We don%26#39;t need guides, we just want to day pack it and spend at least 1 day on the river...what about weather in January???Should we expect mosquito%26#39;s? What do you all think? What is the best price we can expect flying from Laos to Bangkok (what airlines)...one way?

    Thanks

    Karma/Trouble

    3 days, what to do....

I can certainly recommend the Lotus Villa - mid range, very clean, excellent breakfast and friendly helpfulstaff and owners. It is very well situated. Personally I think much of the charm of the town is just relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere - you dont want to rush around! There are lots of good restaurants and of course wats, but you dont need to see them all! Climb Mount Phousi just before sunset, experience Tak Bat, which you can do from the front of the Lotus Villa, visit Wat Xieng Thong, just along the street, or a cooking class at Tamarind, along the street in the other direction. I loved just wondering around without a %26#39;game plan%26#39;, walking along the river banks and yes a trip on the Mekong is great - hire a boat and just spend as long as you wish (preferable than going on an organised %26#39;tour%26#39; of which there are many). I can assure you - you will wish you were staying longer than 3 days!

Bangkok Air flies from LP to Bangkok (about $212) So does Lao Air(about $253).Lao Air also flies from Vientiane to Bangkok (about S173). I dont knowif it will suit your plans but I flew Vientiane to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia (brand new plane/arrived early) for under $60

    3 days, what to do....

Hi and thanks, that was really helpful. I really liked your advice about a private boat down river. What would you expect to pay for the day in U.S. Dollars. All your suggestions we%26#39;re great. I didn%26#39;t tell you this but will be coming from Chaing Mai to Luang Probang. We will be spending 12 day%26#39;s in Myanmar and then take a timeout in one of our favorite places in the world, Chaing Mai. By the way, we are seriously thinking South Africa next year. Do you think we are on the right track!

    Sincerely,

    Roger

    San Diego!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Roger

I paid $10 for a very enjoyable hour on the Mekong, just the two of us in our own boat. Sorry don%26#39;t know what a full day would cost - probably $60?? There were always plenty of boatmen ready to offer their services and strike a deal.

Have you thought of taking the boat downstream from Houeisay to Luang Prabang with Asian Oasis (www.asian-oasis.com) - they can include a private transfer from Chiang Rai.

S.Africa is also agreat destination - Cape Town and the Winelands offers so much for the visitor. I don%26#39;t know anyone who comes here who is not bowled over by what they experience. If you want %26#39;safari%26#39; then you have to go to the Kruger area or at least the Eastern Cape to experience that.

(I spent an enjoyable few days in San Diego about 10 years ago).

LP is great for just wandering and enjoying the ambience of the temples and coffee shops ,further out of the town you can go trekking white water rafting.I stayed in the 3 Nagas and was very happy(see my review)

Probably one of the most enjoyable trips was to get one of the boatmen to take you across the river where you can wander along the bank through a small village and see several semi abandoned Wats. There are also great views back across the river to LP.For a few dollars you can arrange for the boat man to drop you off then pick you up again further along the river.

    hi there

what is your travel plan from chaing mai to Luang Prabang?

    Hi,

I am also trying to get to Luang Prabang from Chiang Mai. Lao Airlines flies there but I%26#39;m having a hard time booking a ticket online. Can anyone recommend a good travel agent in CM?

    Thanks,

  • BKK airport closure - the impact on Laos tourism

As a lot of people travelling to Laos come via BKK, I%26#39;m just wondering how BKK airport closure is going to impact also on Laos tourism for the upcoming peak season.

We are scheduled to fly into BKK on 7/12, staying only one day and then training it to Ubon Ratchathani then onto Pakse. About a week after that we have a flight from Pakse to Vientiane. BKK airport might only be closed for a short time but some people are starting to speculate that it could be closed for quite a while. Even if the airport reopens, I%26#39;m not sure I want to go there.

I%26#39;m currently trying to figure out how to get to Pakse without going via BKK. I have a feeling it%26#39;s not going to be easy.

BKK airport closure - the impact on Laos tourism

air asia fly from Kuala lumpur to vientiane and siem reap airways fly from siem reap to pakse (although i notice they have suspended all bookings at the moment......???)

BKK airport closure - the impact on Laos tourism

Yes, the BKK airport shutdown is horrible for travellers and Lao tourism businesses alike. Let%26#39;s hope it ends quickly without bloodshed.

On a brighter note, earlier this week on the BBC I saw an interview with the head of Air Asia and, apart from saying he expected to grow his airline tenfold in the next two years, said that the airline now offers flights from London to Kuala Lumpur for US$150 (although I understand passengers have to take their turn at the plane%26#39;s controls!)

Additionally, a couple of days ago, the Vientiane Times carried a large Air Asia ad anouncing flights from Kuala Lumpur to Vientiane for what seemed like pennies (I can%26#39;t remember the exact amount, perhaps other Vientiane residents can).

Hopefully, in future many more visitors to Laos will be able to come here more cheaply and without having to transit in Bangkok.

The closure of Bangkok%26#39;s airports is having a terrible effect on the tourism industry in Laos, and I have received many cancellations over the last week. I am actually %26#39;stuck%26#39; in Bangkok at the moment (there are far worse places to be stuck). Trains and buses from Bangkok and Nong Khai (border crossing into Laos near Vientiane) still have plenty of availability though.

As most flights for tourists for Laos,Cambodia,Vietnam and Myanmar from European airports go via BKK the impact of the closure affects all of the region, and just when the high season is starting.

    Come on Thailand-sort it,and quick!

Mine is a sad story, but probably a common one, about the effects of the BKK airport closure.

We were supposed to fly from Singapore to Bangkok, then on the same day to Udon Thani, take an international bus on the following morning and spend 8 days in different locations in Laos.

Now we are stuck in Singapore because Air Asia does not reschedule the flights before they cancel the original ones. Therefore, the only option is to wait and then fly from Kuala Lumpur to Vientiane, and the price of that flight has gone up by 35 % since the closure. We had bought the tickets in July when the Aussi dollar was strong and the ticket prices low, so even tough we will receive a full refund in the form of ';Credit Shell'; it is not even close enought to cover the cost of new tickets.

Because we have to wait for the flight cancellations and new flights, our itinerary in Laos is ruined. We are lucky if we have time to come to Laos at all! I am already writing cancellation emails to hotels, and my heart is bleeding! It will take many years before we are able to do this kind of trip again.

I am so disappointed, upset and fed up with the Thais - both protestors and government!

We%26#39;re essentially in the same boat. Supposed to fly Melbourne to Bangkok 7/12 but that%26#39;s just not going to happen. The only feasible option for us is to fly into Singapore, train it up to KL and catch that flight to Vientiane, and yes adds quite a lot to the trip for a family of 4.

We were going to enter southern Laos from Bangkok via Ubon Ratchathani and we had a flight from Pakse to Vientiane a week after that. So even if we can make it to Laos the whole itinerary is screwed. We were also going to exit Laos via Chiang Khong in northern Thailand with flight from Chiang Rai back to BKK late December. If this situation is still happening then who knows how long we would be stuck in BKK.

So at this stage it looks like we will have to cancel. And we are set to lose more then $6000, been saving and planning for quite a while for this trip. My family is devastated. Who can I send the bill to.....

I like(ed) Thailand and BKK one of our favourite places but never again will I set foot in that country. I%26#39;m sick of their carryings on over the years (been travelling there since the early 80s) and things have just gone from bad to worse on the political front. Hopefully the world will now see them for what they really are and shut them out. They had me hoodwinked for nearly 3 decades.

I have been trying to contact Laos airlines in Vietnane via email and phone to see if there is any way we can cancel/reschedule/reroute our Pakse-Vientiane flight but I have been unable to contact them. This is not helping. Any suggestions anyone.

To all those on this thread who are affected: I hope that your situation can be resolved and that you don%26#39;t lose money.

The selfish PAD really have caused a great deal of people a lot of hardship, and not only their own countrypeople.

Hi dclayw, yes, you seem to be in the same boat with us and with many more.

My advice and philosophy in this situation is to minimize the loss. If your Mel-BKK flight is cancelled by the airline, you will receive a full refund, I believe (?). You will lose only the price of Laos flights, which is much I know, but it is still less than losing the whole holiday. If you can get a flight to SIN, your plan to fly out from KL to VTE is a sound one, and when in Laos, you can go to Lao Airlines office and sort out the rest of your tickets. You have plenty of time to travel overland in Laos and then go home the same way you arrived.

There is a Lao Airlines office (agent) in Singapore which may be able to help as well. I bought Lao Airlines ticket on internet, and I believe, that they can be amended, changed or cancelled, with a fee of course. We have to change our flight from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, to Vientiane-Hanoi, as we will have no time to go to north at all. I dont know yet how much extra we have to pay.

Rufuscat, thank you for your note. It is not only us tourists who are losing money, I feel really sorry for the tourist operators in Laos. They are in this mess without any reason at all, they are the real victims.

dclayw Sorry but today Tuesday the airline office is closed for it%26#39;s Lao National Day.

Try sending a fax on Wednesday alerting them to your e-mails. Remember they are 3 hours behind Brisbane time zone.

    Hope that helps.

Yep. Lao National Day today. Everything is closed.

Bangkok Airways - Pakse route no longer available to book??

Does anyone know why you can no longer book these flights? According to their route map you can still fly there but Pakse has disappeared from the drop down list when trying to book a flight.

I know that Siem Reap Airways has stopped flying at the moment due to appearing on the EU ban list (although im not sure why - have asked this question on the cambodian forum) but this BKK - Pakse is a Bangkok Airways flight not Siem Reap Airways....

Bangkok Airways - Pakse route no longer available to book??

I flew from Pakse to Bangkok on Bangkok Air a week and a half ago. Perhaps they temporarily suspended the option because of the Bangkok airport closures?

slow boat to Luang Prabang options

I visited Laos a few years ago and loved the trip down the Mekong from Huay Xia to Luang Prabang, partly because I was on a pre-organised Intrepid tour and we only had 3 passengers on the slow boat, so although it was really basic we had plenty of room. My parents are visiting Laos in July and want to do the same trip, but I%26#39;m not sure if they%26#39;ll like the standard backpacker slow boats which seem to be absolutely packed. The only alternative seems to be the LuangSay, which seems totally over priced at $350 per person for the 2 day 1 night trip.

Is anyone aware of any other options? My parents are used to roughing it, and have travelled extensively in Asia and are doing the trip independently. But I still think they would enjoy a mid range option better.

slow boat to Luang Prabang options

I%26#39;m going myself on the 4th April %26#39;08 (Thailand, Laos and Cambodia) and from all the research I%26#39;ve done you%26#39;ve only the two options you mention available. A posh comfy expensive ride (onboard food and drinks etc incl.) see link here http://www.asian-oasis.com/Luang.html or a sweaty packed-like-a-sardine type ride.

I would imagine over time as this part of Laos expands commercially other options will become available.

slow boat to Luang Prabang options

Hi, thanks for your response. I have found one other option, which seems mid range - the Nagi of Mekong cruise - don%26#39;t know much about it though. You should be able to get more info if you email

    sunquest@travel-thailand.com

I hope you enjoy your trip, and if you find another option, I%26#39;d love to read a post about it.

nagiofmekong.com are a cheaper alternative rather than the more expensive LuangSay option. I have E-Mailed nagiofmekong and they come back with a quick reply that they have booked us two seats. Two weeks before you leave they just require your passports etc. I think their web site needs fine tuning, because it is a bit confusing in places. Still if anybody has done this trip with this company it would be good to hear from you.

How were you able to email Nagi of Mekong? I used their online booking form but got no response??

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Have any of you actually taken the trip with Nagi of Mekong? I too believe I have reservations for February and want to hear from folks who have taken the trip including all these extra promises: hotel in Thailand night before, transport to Laos border, overnight in ';real hotel'; at Pak Bang, stops at caves, and food along the way. Also decent seats are promised. Thanks for any real information from customers of Nagi of Mekong.

I%26#39;ve been emailing Nagi of Mekong on this email address:

    adisak.star@googlemail.com

I am in Laos now and did this trip with Nagi a week ago. All claims were spot on. The boat was comfortable and the food was good. Accomodation in Pak Beng was basic but clean. There were only three of us on the boat and it was a fantastic experience. I stayed in Huay Xiao and was picked up on the moring of the trip. WSell worth the money especially when you see the boats with teenage backpackers on them.

Another boat cruise option which is far less busy than the houeyxai-LP route is from Muang Ngoi to LP down the Nam Ou. Ngoi is beautiful and is just starting to take off as a tourist destination - its in LP province about 3 hours drive from LP town.

luang prabang to luang nam tha and huay xai

Hi everyone, we are travelling to laos in December for about a week. Does anyone know what would be the best way to go from Luang Prabang to Luang Nam Tha--I think there is an evening bus so you don%26#39;t ose a day travelling but would it be better to hire a car and driver? Also, does anyone know if it is easy to hire a car and driver in Luang Nam Tha to take us to Huay Xai--all the buses seem to be in the morning and we would like to go in the late afternoon. Thanks in advance.

luang prabang to luang nam tha and huay xai

it is easy to hire a minibus and driver in Luang Prabang to go virtually anywhere. However prices have sky-rocketed over the last year and you would probably be looking at a minimum of USD150 for the trip to Luang Namtha.

luang prabang to luang nam tha and huay xai

There are local buses to luang Namtha , it is a long day most people break their journey in oudomxay . Another suggestion for both trips is to look at the whiteboards outside agents premises . There are often minibuses looking for backloads , particularly in L N going back to huay xai. The local bus to Huay Xai, including pickup from your guest house cost 82,000 kip ($10 US), a minibus looking for passengers to go home should be about the same. Make sure that arent too many people .The road to Huay Xai is one of the newest and only takes 3 1/2 hr by minbus or 5 in a local bus.Be aware that it takes a long time to get anywhere by road , esp local buses.

There are local buses running evening and through the night from LP to Oudomxai - I was up there last week and some colleagues got one about 9pm. You can then get an early morning bus on to L Namtha.

The new road 13 has deteriorated quite badly last rainy season with lots of washouts and landslides so its not as fast as it was last year.

The new airport in L Namtha opened this year too, so thats another possible option for LP to Namtha

  • Travel Indochina Tours

I%26#39;ve just booked a trip with Travel Indochina based in Australia. After booking the trip, the company now says that there are not enough people to hire a Western guide and wish to replace him/her with local guides.

Has anyone else used this tour group? Were you happy with them? Disappointed? Thank you!!

    Travel Indochina Tours

I went with them last oct %26amp; had a great time I am Australian %26amp; booked in Australia there was 7 of us so enough for both western %26amp; Lao guides %26amp; both guides were good.I had a friend who had used them in 2006 to Cambodia %26amp; were happy with them %26amp; it was only 2 of them %26amp;therefore only had local guide. The trip I did with Travel Indochina was only 4 days %26amp; was called Lao Highlights

    Travel Indochina Tours

I did a 14 day tour of Vietnam with Travel Indochina Sept 07. Very well organised tour, with superb accommodation, well paced itinerary, and attention to individual interests. Local guides even organised some school visits to sate my interest in eductaion. Local guides were enthusiastic, and very keen to be of any asssistance. Of the five that joined us along different sections, only one was difficult to understand. Despite the tour brochure giving the impression that their market is 30 - 50 years from the look of the people in the pictures, the guide said they market to the 50 - 65 age bracket which was certainly the age of most people on the tour I was on except for me 40 and a 26 year old! Still highly recommended.

I know for a fact that Travel Indochina is in serious financial problems...they are not providing you a western guide because they can%26#39;t afford them any longer...it is a shame. Just recently Travel Indochina begun to make several employees redundant...

Make sure you get travel insurance that covers for everything should the company go down...:-(

I did a tour in September this year with local guides (through Viengchampa) and found them very good, so I wouldn%26#39;t worry too much.

  • Mekong Sun River Cruise in Laos

I%26#39;ve read that in Laos there is now a fairly new cruise vessel called Mekong Sun, a German-Lao joint venture that cruises from/to Luang Prabang. Has anyone experienced their services? I can see on their webpage that they are quite upmarket so would like to know if it%26#39;s worth the trip? Other than that particular boat I can only find the regular slowboat 2-day trips, but these have no cabins, so need to reach the lodge in Pakbeng. I%26#39;d prefer the cruise experience with more time to stop at remote villages and supposedly spend the night under the stars instead of in small towns. Thanks beforehand for your experiences.

Mekong Sun River Cruise in Laos

I have seen their boat, The Mekong Sun, I think it was in Pakbeng, It is a nice vessel indeed ! Did you try it finally ? As I travel often on this path, as a photographer, I usually take the Luang Say Mekong Cruise, with a stop at the Luang Say Lodge (Pakbeng). You will have no problem finding their website or info and nice reviews about them on this site...

I really like them, but i would not mind having hints about alternative ways to make this trip around Luang Prabang as comfortably. Please keep me posted if you%26#39;ve been on this one.

Mekong Sun River Cruise in Laos

Aha , i have checked in great wall hotel in Pakse city almost 15 days. veery night i walk around the mekong river, it%26#39;s let me feeling so beautiful, the city is so quite.the wind lightly.sometimes you can hear the birds singing.i like here, i am so relax.

I have still not been there, but finally decided to book a cruise early December on the Mekong Sun. I am quite excited and hope the trip meets my expectations!! I%26#39;ll update here afterwards of the experiences.

Now Bangkok chaos doesn%26#39;t seem to make travel a lot easier, does it? Well I am checking at the moment different connections via Hanoi, which has daily flights to Luang Prabang and Vientiane..

Even though BKK will work soon again I guess, I had to postpone my trip for now.. I hope to be able to make it in JAN and will then write about my experiences. If anyone gets there before or has been there, kindly let us know about your journey - that would be highly appreciated!

IMPORTANT: TAK BAT and stupid tourists

Have been in Luang Prabang for 4 days now. Aside from the natural beauty of this gem of a place we noticed some very disconcerting behaviour from TOURISTS observing and participating in dawn Tak Bat or Alms giving to the monks.

    1. Do not use flash photography. It interferes with the monks observance.

    2. I saw one man line up to offer a monk alms whilst taking a photo with his other free hand.

    3. If you MUST part-take in this ritual, do not purchase offerings from vendors on the street. Have your hotel or guest house make rice for you in the morning and when offering rice, fruit etc do not look at the monks.

    4. Suggest you part-take only if you have spiritual leanings and understand that Buddhist way of like here is under threat from tourism.

    5. If you see inappropriate behaviour, confront it, GENTLY.

    6. If in doubt about how you as a tourist should observe, just keep a respectful distance, observe and if taking a photo - DONT USE FLASH.

FEWER LAO ARE PART-TAKING IN TAK BAT AT DAWN DUE TO INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR.

Remember, this place is a world heritage site due it its natural and spiritual beauty. Lao need your tourism and $. But, leave the aggressive ';must have, must get, must do'; attitude at home.

IMPORTANT: TAK BAT and stupid tourists

    Absolutely agree. 100%.

In fact I%26#39;d take it further. Not only no FLASH but no photographs at all.

How can people be so insensitive? You can almost hear them saying ';oh, how quaint';, and out comes the camera and then they don%26#39;t really ';see'; anything at all. Just that small square in the viewfinder or the LCD screen.

Why can%26#39;t they just go and quietly watch and appreciate being there? Instead of destroying what it is they came to ';see'; (haha). I%26#39;d like to know why people like that go there in the first place.

IMPORTANT: TAK BAT and stupid tourists

    100 % agree.

    Hi Ladymann,

Yes - some people seem to be quite insensitive or unaware of protocols when observing Tak Bat. Yet calling them stupid just continues an energy of judgement and alienation.

Perhaps speaking in a more respectful way would reinforce the respect that you would like to see in others. A more inclusive way to say it might use the words - inappropriate behaviour rather than stupid.

One demands justification - the other reflection.

Just a thought of how we must be the change we wish to see in the world - thank you Gandhi.

Anyone who knows how to use a camera should have an ability to take pictures without a flash.

Hi ladymann - as a regular visitor (monthly) to LP I totally agree with you, except for buying from the vendors selling small packets of sticky rice.

They are just trying to find a niche in the tourist industry that provides LP with its money, just like everyone else, whether it be handicrafts, European style restaurants, boat rides and all the rest of it.

Whilst I%26#39;ve never bought from them I have never found them pushy when I have walked past. They are mostly old ladies that go out at 5am to make a few $.

But I do not mean this to detract from your main point - which is a worthy reminder to future visiors.

Just as a matter of interest. It is not called Tak Bat. Tak Bat is when you go to the temple to make an offering.

Its called Sai Bat - forgot to mention this in my last post.

To all replies, thank you. With respect, I stand by my %26#39;stupid%26#39; observation. People should know better.

The tourist information I read before attending the morning ritual named Tak Bat as the morning giving of alms (by the Luang Prabang tourism authority). So apologies for any Sai Bat, Tak Bat confusion. (BTW the vendors are non Buddhist animist tribes from the hills. I dont begrudge them a living, just consider who is impacting who.)

To reiterate, I saw some well educated, well heeled, well fed people behave appallingly.

I shall make no further comment and I stand by my opinion on what I saw in Luang Prabang. ( Please send further comments to UNESCO office in Luang Prabang.)

Oh, please do drop in to Big Brother Mouse, the kids love to chat in English.

Thanks all for the advice on how to behave respectfully when observing Sai Bat. With regards to discouraging tourists from partaking in the offering of food, however, I wonder what the monks themselves think. It%26#39;s interesting, but we really all only have the perspective of a tourist. I can imagine that on one hand, they may resent the intrusion of outsiders into their ceremony, while on the other, they may be grateful for the donation regardless of the source.

Any monks/former monks out there with an opinion on the subject?

I may be putting myself out there to be classified as ';Stupid';... I went to LP only knowing that it was a UNESCO site and that it was beautiful. I know little about Buddism, and the main reason I was made aware of the alms procession was simply because I heard other tourists talking about it. One morning I heard the clanking of plates and I stepped (barefoot)out onto the enclosed terrace of my hotel and there they were. It was a cloudy morning I silently observed from my hotel terrace and snapped a couple of pictures which may or may not have triggered the auto flash. I was aproached a couple of times by some older women to purchase offerings, to which I declined because a)I was just a visitor and b)I am not Buddist. Afterwords I read up and learned more about what I had experienced. I dont think I am stupid. Ignorant? Perhaps, but respectfull and eager to learn about something so beautiful, whatever it%26#39;s called.
