Currency of choice?

I understand that US$ are the most widely accepted currency in Laos (other than Kip).

How would I fare using Aussie dollars? Don%26#39;t really want to buy US$, but if I have to.....

I will be travelling all over Laos, down to Cambodian border.

Bring baht or dollars, both are widely used.

If you were only going to the major tourist areas, I%26#39;d say aud would be ok. As it is, take Maneki%26#39;s advice.

You can change your $AUD at any bank or currency exchange but you will find very few shops or restaurants etc will take then directly as payment.

Good condition $US or baht notes can be used as currency directly in all larger towns and tourist places.

There is currently a big government push and advertising campaign on to use Lao kip whilst in Laos, so if you are going to change your foreign notes into kip at a bank before spending your money it doesn%26#39;t matter - USD or AUD.
