Hi..we are going to Laos in March and have 2 nights/1 full day in Vientiane and 3 days in Luang Prabang. Is it worth planning excursions with local travel companies in advance or when we get there..? I have a guide book but would be interested to hear what are the must sees given the time we have. Thanks!

The city of Vientiane is great for a walking tour, or you can opt to rent bicycles to get around and see more. Luang Prabang is totally navigatable on foot. You can head down to the riverside in the morning and catch a boat to the Pak Ou caves or hire a tuk-tuk to take you to the waterfalls, but you will not need to book a tour.
