After heading up north and seeing Luang Prabang, head up even further and check out the Plain of Jars.

(and scroll down just a bit) to see some photos of Laos and the jars, etc.

From Phonsavan (where the jars are) fly back to Vientiane, and head down to Pakse. From Pakse you can see Wat Phu, a World Heritage Site. Pakse is also worth a day for sightseeing and hanging out. If you plan your trip really carefully, you can even spend a couple of days on the islands in Si Pha Don before you head back up north (I am assuming you fly in/out of Vientiane). There are flights from pakse-Vientiane or you can opt for the bus. (The night bus is the most comfortable) Cheers!

Sorry, they didn%26#39;t post that as a link, you%26#39;ll have to copy %26amp; paste it...

thank you - am taking a look now - greatly appreaciated

If you%26#39;re on a budget you might not want to fly to Pakse, but you could take buses there via Thakek and Savannakhet. The ecoguide unit in Savannakhet does a really nice one-day tour around the place. It%26#39;s also well worth visiting the Kong Lor caves on the way down, too - amazing 7 km. journey through a river-tunnel under the mountain. You can stay in a homestay nearby at US$5 per night - real family life in a village, and give alms to the monk (there%26#39;s only one in residence!) in the temple next morning. Not far from Thakek there%26#39;s a Buddha cave with hundreds of statues - it was only discovered recently and the villagers run it as a community enterprise.

eastridinglass,

Could you tell me where exactly is Kong Lor caves?

I am going to Laos in Dec. 9.

bump

Konglor caves are near Thakek.

To get to Khong Lor caves head eastwards along Route 8 towards the Vietnamese border. You will come across a small town and the Theun Hinboun hydro power project. Just before this you will see signposts. I think the small town is called Naphouak, but not 100% sure.

The above directions are not clear. Try this link:
